Patent Indices holding steady

ALBANY, NY (January 14, 2008)(8:00)(EST) — Hoffman, Warnick & D'Alessandro LLC (HWD), an intellectual property law firm based in Albany, NY, has released the Tech Valley Patent Index for Fourth Quarter 2007, the 2007 Annual Report and the 2007 Annual Quarterly Average Report.  The “Patent Index” and the Annual Reports include data for: the Capital Region ( Albany , Schenectady , Saratoga and Rensselaer counties), Tech Valley , Tech Valley without IBM and GE, and the Capital Region without GE.

With regard to the Fourth Quarter, “the growth in Tech Valley is apparent by the steady increase in issued patents.  Unfortunately, the Capital Region is down compared to previous years.  However, this trend mirrors the national number, so may be attributable to the Patent Office having a bad year," stated Spencer Warnick , partner at Hoffman, Warnick & D’Alessandro.

The "Patent of the Quarter" is chosen to illustrate firsthand the creativity of Tech Valley inventors.  This quarter, the POQ is awarded to: US Patent No. 7278565 issued to Thomas West for “Box Flap Locking System.”  The patent issued October 9, 2007.  The patent is assigned to Norampac Schenectady, which is a client of Hoffman, Warnick & D’Alessandro.
